Just started playing last night and like it so far.  I did have a question or two.

First, I own all the expansions, DLC etc. But play without Mercenaries as for me they seem to be too disruptive.  Do I miss anything new by not playing with Mercs on?

Where can I find out more about commonwealths as to what they are, pro and cons, how and when to form them?

As I understand I earn more money based upon number of tiles I "own".  Is this automatic or is there tech I have to research and/or something I have to build?

I have this crazy pirate queen thing roaming around my stuff and has destroyed some stuff.  Rather powerful and I am not advanced enough to destroy it yet.  Not sure how I feel about it, but just mentioning it.

Thanks in advance for help.

Still hoping for insight here.

Current game I have resigned. finally killed pirate queen.  Created two commonwealths at game recommendation.  Not knowing what it really did I left myself only Earth and Mar to manage.  Seems commonwealths are like Stellaris' sectors.  Still would like to have more information on these things.

Anyway, crisis came along (the universe is a computer similation) and it resulted in Earth being destroyed and my capital moved to Mars and that was all I had to play with.  Economy tanked quickly at loss of research, production, etc after Earth destroyed.  Threw in the towel on this one.

The Bazaar with its mercenary ships, the Arceans and the Torians.

Essentially you create a civilizations that is allied with you and give them planets, their influence is counted as your influence for Influence victory. This is mostly if you have too many planets and don't know what to do with them.

This is based on a rework of tourism.

Tourism is now based on the amount of tiles you own. This is doubled if these tiles are connected to your home planet and multiplied by Tourism improvements on each colony. The more Influence you have, the more space you control, the more money you will make from Tourism. (this change requires Crusade)

Arceans and Torians apparently also come the Crusade expansion, so he should already have them. The only other thing that Mercenaries should have for an owner of Crusade is the discreet ability which depends on there being a mercenary market (no prebuilt race even uses Discreet anymore).

The mercenaries help out a lot - especially in early/mid game - specifically the mercs that increase your cash, trade, research, raw production, military production, manufacturing and the "Swayer" that instantly flips any non capitol planets to your empire. Give it a shot - it's well worth it.

You are definitely going to miss out without Mercenaries. They have so many benefits.

Early game: mercs with huge sensors can help you find habitable planets much faster. Sometimes you can get lucky and get a Survey merc that earns extra coin when it surveys anomalies.

Mid game: There are mercs with good bonuses to production to station around your core planets (homeworld especially). There are some great mercs for Influence if you need to fight off an influential neighbor, or want to culture flip a planet. There are also a couple mercs with bonuses to Research and Wealth.

Late game: There are great mercs for war. The ones I really like adding to my fleets are the ones that offer +50% bonus to moves.

The survey merc got nerf to the ground. It give you 25 credits instead of 250.
